Bereshit- In the Beginning God created Truth. What is the reason for Creation?
In scrolling through Safeguarding The Eternal I realized that although I have an entry inculding this Torah portion, which spans from Genesis 1:1–6:8, I do not have a specific Bereshit entry. It seemed overwhelming to think about covering the immense content of these chapters and surely this is not a task I will even deign to attempt. What I will do is express what HaShem showed me this year and what I gleaned from all my Good Shepherds (teachers, friends, resources, etc.) . It is said that the dedication and intention with which one comes to the very first portion of the Holy Torah will set a tone for the entire cycle, therefore May Yah be blessed and exalted in all and may you be blessed.
Isaiah 46; 9 “Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; God, and there is no one like Me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, ‘My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure’11 Calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of My purpose from a far country.Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned I will do it.
If we read this passage from Isaiah with trust we can be assured that there is a hint to what is to come and what to expect from Genesis. Furthermore, if God’s word is good from beginning to end we can also find the Gospel from the beginning. The letter Beit begins the Torah and it is an enlarged letter (meaning- in every Torah scroll the scribe deliberately made letter Beit bigger than the rest.). Anywhere you see these ‘anomalies’ it is like a highlighter/red flag….STOP, think, pay attention….there is something deeper here. The letter Beit in the ancient picture language represents the House. How lovely, the creation account is the ‘story’ of a Father setting up a House for His ultimately prime creation- man. So too you could look at it as the King setting up His Kingdom even from the beginning. My husband made a beautiful comment about this idea. ” It is the beginning of a House and a House for New beginning.” After a whirlwind few months of unforgettable, meaningful Fall Feasts and finishing out the Torah cycle with Simchat Torah- Rejoicing with the Torah….we roll back the scroll and begin again. Truly, coming back to Bereshit and a new Torah cycle is like coming home again.
Bereshit (Genesis) 1; 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
God is completely Righteous and the totality of His word is True. Not a single bit of it will expire or fall short. Not now, not ever. This is evidenced from the very 2nd, 3rd, and 4th words of the Torah. If you take the last letters of these Hebrew words and put them together (as shown in the image above- Hebrew is read from right to left) you find the Word- EMET. TRUTH. Could this be the very purpose for even building the House in the first place? The reason for Gods’ creating? To reveal truth in the world, in His people, from the beginning to eternity.
Bereshit (Genesis) 1; 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
My daughter and I discussed our mind’s eye reckoning of this mystery. For truly it must be said that even with the utmost faith, the most finely tuned wisdom, the highest capacity for the intellect….the idea of creation from nothing, God before time itself exists, and even more challenging…..the purposes for Creation at all, they are inconceivable in full. There is an element of Mystery and unknown one should acknowledge. She pictured water as blue. We thought more and without the light, water is very dark….black. Prior to the formation of land and sea there is this aqueous stage and nothing beside the Spirit of the Lord (Ruach Elohim) fluttering above it.
Bereshit (Genesis) 1; 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
The first created ‘thing’ is light. It doesn’t say ‘God also created the darkness’. It is light which is also the first thing God calls good (He doesn’t say the day and night are good- just that initial created light). The darkness of water and the light in its contrast. The sages say that if the Torah is more than a history book, if we believe it is a book of teaching, directives, if it is a book of Mitzvot (Commandments) then we should be able to find a commandments in these texts. This verse could indicate the creation of time. For reading on we find that the sun and moon are created as governors for the day and nights which are created previously. That the separation of light and darkness defines time, evening and morning, is a beautiful concept. Additionally this is the secure reasoning behind the Hebrew calendar having the “day” beginning at the time of Sundown and ending at the following Sundown (ex: one day= sundown- sundown, not Sunrise to Sunrise.)
Read Psalm 18 (below) with the Creation account in mind. Then I will tell you what I always thought this Psalm was about before I connected it to Bereshit this cycle. Take with you in your reading these treasures: the word translated as Canopy (v10)- is the Hebrew word Sukkah (as in the temporary shelters set up when the Hebrews were redeemed from Egypt, as in the shelters we were just dwelling in recently commemorating our Creator’s provision and redemption from that Slavery and more!). The word translated as blast (v15)- is the Hebrew word Neshamah- breath or spirit, as in that which the Lord breathed into Adam, and he became a living SOUL (the more frequently used translation for this word.) The word translated as breath (v15)- is the Hebrew word Ruach- wind, breath, vital spirit or Holy Spirit (as in that which was basking above the dark waters pre-Creation.)
Psalm 18; 9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down with thick darkness under His feet.
10 He rode upon a cherub and flew; and He sped upon the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness His hiding place, His canopy around Him, darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 From the brightness before Him passed His thick clouds, hailstones and coals of fire.
13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered His voice, hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He sent out His arrows, and scattered them, and lightning flashes in abundance, and routed them.
15 Then the channels of water appeared, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at Your rebuke, O Lord,
at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. 16 He sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of many waters.
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my stay.
19 He brought me forth also into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me.
Can’t you just see it! Bowing down the heavens, coming from the thick darkness which He had cloaked Himself in, the Mystery of the Echad (One) God of Creation, the darkness of water, thick clouds which didn’t pour rain until commanded to [ Bereshit (Genesis) 2; 5 Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.] The calling forth creation, sending forth His voice…through His words all came to be! Separating water and water, channels of water….even the rivers and head waters [ Bereshit (Genesis) 2; 10 Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Tigris; it flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. *please note what materials were mentioned- several materials needed for the construction of the Tabernacle and use in Temple service. ] The breath and the spirit of God even mention of the nostrils into which God breathed into Adam- man and he becomes a soul! The mention of the enemy (serpent) and God’s deliverance from calamity, giving Adam a chance to go forth and live….not as it had been (ideally- at one and in Paradise with God), yet still….not sentenced to the death his adversary had hoped to trap him in.
Exodus 19; 5 Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; 6 and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ 9 The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe in you forever.”…. 11 and let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 16 So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 18 Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder.
Now I will tell you, I always thought that this Psalm was about the revelation at Sinai. HaShem coming down and resting His presence on the Mountain, the thunder and lightning, the thick cloud in which He ‘hid’ himself, the fire and trembling of the mountain and the people, His voice coming forth to pronounce His commandments- His Torah and bestowing it upon mankind. I don’t think I was wrong, I was just missing the creation account as a parallel preceding connection. To understand what I see let me share with you a few things I learned about the purpose for Creation. Why make the world? Why make man?
God is perfect, the seed of creation was perfect, everything needed to make the universe was within the seed ready to immediately come into being and within the seed we find the purpose was there too. Searching for the purposes for creation sheds light and connects all our works to our spark- our soul- that piece of Godliness in each one of us He left there. Searching the reasons for our existence reunites us with the depths of God’s will and our purpose here as human beings….to shed light in this world. This search helps us remember how to bring Godly light down into this world, sweetening all the actions in this world and connecting them to their holy roots. To taste of the reasons for creation is like gathering sparks! – Notes taken from Bereshit class given by Rabbi M. Goldsmith
Everything that God created in this world, was created for His glory. The fight against our desire to bring God honor in our lives is evident. Over the feast of Sukkot, the time of our rejoicing, there were four precious people in Israel slaughtered. Today as I type these words I am warmed by a tall blue candle I have lit for the three Israeli’s murdered today….there are dozens in the hospital and the violence continues. The evil forces in this world do not want to see the Glory of God be revealed again within His people. in the Land of Israel and in the Holy Temple. That is why this fight is so intense against it, against the vessels willing and able to shine the light of the divine and honor Him in this world. For Israel is God’s witness…..
Isaiah 43; 7 Everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, even whom I have made.” 8 Bring out the people who are blind, even though they have eyes, and the deaf, even though they have ears. 9 All the nations have gathered together so that the peoples may be assembled.
Who among them can declare this and proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their witnesses that they may be justified, or let them hear and say, “It is true.” 10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the Lord,
“And My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He.
Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me.11 “I, even I, am the Lord, and there is no savior besides Me.
Truly! What better defense would a believer have toward an atheist than to beckon them to explain Israel. Explain their productivity, explain their very existence among the sea of hungry lions which surround them, explain the 6-day-war, explain the rockets changing target in midair. Witness, Israel is the witness by their very existence. And this is one reason for creation, that God be honored in this world and that He found a vessel for His honor…..IF Israel and the Jewish people in totality could make teshuvah and return to HaShem and His Torah and begin to hate once again what He hates and to adore once more what He adores we would all truly become the testifiers to the wondrous turn of events that could take place for them in the Land. Unfortunately, as we said from the start….the end is declared from the beginning and “That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun. ” Ecclesiastes 1;9 We know that things most likely will get worse, and still….a remnant is ALWAYS preserved. May it be enlarged, soon and in our days, for life.
Isaiah 10; 20 Now in that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 For though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea, a remnant within them will return; a destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness. 23 For a complete destruction, one that is decreed, the Lord God of hosts will execute in the midst of the whole land.
Another reason for creation is said to be that HaShem (The Name-God) desired to have a dwelling below. Ideally in the Garden it was close and personal with God. After the sin of man there was no way God in His ultimate holiness could any longer have that same connection in proximity to Adam. Thus there was separation. Each time sin became worse the presence of the Lord retreated further away until the time came to rectify in part that wedge driven between the Creator and His children. God’s presence being revealed once more on Sinai was like He is entering the garden once more….to meet His bride, Israel.
Jeremiah 31; 1 “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be My people.” 2 Thus says the Lord, “The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness—
Israel, when it went to find its rest.” 3 The Lord appeared to him from afar, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness. 4 “Again I will build you and you will be rebuilt,
O virgin of Israel! Again you will take up your tambourines, and go forth to the dances of the merrymakers.
This is why Moshe is so concerned after his intersession for the people post sin of the golden calf. He knew they had found forgiveness, BUT without the glory with them He knew they would never make it, nor would there be any purpose for going on at all. For a long time people have been sleeping, the urgency for God’s glory in His Holy House has been subdued and nearly forgotten….until now. We are alive at a time where there are terrible and frightening things going on all around us, immorality is rampant and every system of justice under God is crumbling worldwide. YET we are also on the heels of a day when the Temple Mount can be reclaimed for His Chosen people and – imagine it- the Holy Temple be rebuilt.
Shemot (Exodus) 33; 12 Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people!’ But You Yourself have not let me know whom You will send with me. Moreover, You have said, ‘I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ 13 Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people.” 14 And He said, “My presence shall go, and I will give you rest.” 15 Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go, do not lead us up from here. 16 For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the people who are upon the face of the earth?” 17 The Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; for you have found favor in My sight and I have known you by name.”
The hope is that when the presence is among us we will be able to behave properly, in turn able to reveal His presence….the construction of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) was the rectification for the space and disconnect caused from the sin of the golden calf. God allowed for that route and I see it all connecting. The garden, Mount Sinai, the Temple….and today? What about now? This leads to the next reason for creation.
God wanted to make a partnership. Without man doing his part there would have been no where assigned for the glory to fall. He waited until all the princes brought their offerings, the Levites were purified, and brothers were in accord until the people were blessed then His Holy Fire consumed all the offerings on the Altar.
[ Numbers 7; 12-89]
Vayikra (Leviticus) 9;22 Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and he stepped down after making the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings. 23 Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting. When they came out and blessed the people, the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24 Then fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the portions of fat on the altar; and when all the people saw, they shouted and fell on their faces.
Before Creation everything was God, there was the eternal Light. No space, no air- everything is God. HaShem had to make room. He willed to bring forth creations who would come to know His attributes, and by them He would be called. He desired creating man with a voice to bring His attributes to fruition, to bestow upon them His goodness. The human world brings them to reality….for we can live in them, experience them, testify to them and this is precisely why we are here. Declaring Who He is in this world through all creation. Having become that Tabernacle wherein He can dwell. Asking Him to rule over us and testifying of His Greatness and His Mercy. The word in the verse below translated as among in Hebrew means WITHIN.
Shemot (Exodus ) 25; 8 Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them. 9 According to all that I am going to show you, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture, just so you shall construct .
Shemot (Exodus) 15; 11 “Who is like You among the gods, O Lord? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders? 12 “You stretched out Your right hand, the earth swallowed them. 13 “In Your lovingkindness You have led the people whom You have redeemed; in Your strength You have guided to Your holy habitation.
Bereshit (Genesis) 1; 26 God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Vayikra (Leviticus) 26;11 Moreover, I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not reject you. 12 I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people.
In the beginning there was darkness. He called to the Light and it was good. I believe this Light is the Light of the Torah. The PURPOSE for creating mankind….to be emulators of our Creator. His instruction is our manual. Like a licence, registration, insurance and a map we should not be driving without it! From the beginning there was a command.
Bereshit 1; 14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years;
To take note of the luminaries which were to serve as signs for appointed times of the Lord. His Feasts as detailed repeatedly in His Torah. The boundaries set some without reason….why plant the forbidden tree at all? To see if my children will truly Honor my Sovereignty and my Right to say, ‘I want it this way, you must obey .’
Bereshit (Genesis) 2;16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
Bereshit (Genesis) 3; 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’”
Bereshit (Genesis) 3; 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
Adam and Chavah taking from that tree. Chavah determining that she now was able to edit and remaster God’s commandments, deciding in fact SHE knew what was Tov- good for her. This is what we see today. God’s word is taken and manipulated to fit the ideology desired. It is renewed through man’s designs and validated without proper verification. The only verification which is accurate is scripture itself. Days of worship are changed, the Sabbath and feasts are mocked and the Torah is declared irrelevant. Many things were good in God’s sight but the Sabbath is the first thing He created blessed and made Holy.
Bereshit (Genesis) 2; 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Was this the perfect seed of creation, the purpose therein? IF you believe that Yeshua is the light of the World, that He was with God and IS God and that for Him ALL things came to be….how can one preach that He changed? He changed the very word He Himself gave. He changed the times that He Himself chose as appointed and verified by giving forth signs at the Feasts of the Lord. He changed his chosen people and exchanged one religion for a new one. Those who attest to these beliefs do not honor their Maker, their Savior or His Creation. This is not the way to bring His light into the world. To sever ties with the ancient path….to pull out your life support….to call His masterpiece a burden….is the very reason Adam and Chavah were punished with exile and separation from their King. Torah in Yeshua is how we can taste of that connection again, everything else aside from that is an illusion. There is only God, He is all.
Mishlei ( Proverbs ) 4; 13Take hold of instruction; do not let go. Guard her, for she is your life.
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 32; 46
he said to them, “Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command your sons to observe carefully, even all the words of this Torah. 47“For it is not an idle word for you; indeed it is your life.
Jeremiah 6; 16 Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk.’ 17 “And I set watchmen over you, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not listen.’ 18 “Therefore hear, O nations,
and know, O congregation, what is among them. 19 “Hear, O earth: behold, I am bringing disaster on this people,
The fruit of their plans, because they have not listened to My words, and as for My Torah, they have rejected it also.
The Torah is known as the Tree of Life in scripture. It’s no coincidence that Adam and Chavah had free access to that tree….and again someday we too will be given the right to live in a restored garden like existence, in eternity with our King, with freedom to eat of the Tree of Life. If Torah is our glimpse into Paradise, because it was crafted by, for, and from Yeshua and we are beckoned to stretch forth our hand and eat of it….who could resist such an invitation?!
Bereshit (Genesis) 3; 22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.
Proverbs 3; 13 How blessed is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gains understanding.
14 For her profit is better than the profit of silver and her gain better than fine gold.15 She is more precious than jewels;and nothing you desire compares with her. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who hold her fast.
Revelation 2; 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.’
The question I receive is this, what purpose has the Torah for a believer in Yeshua? Why bother when He is ALL. Why is He all? What is it about Him that makes Him all we need? Love. He may have created it but it was most certainly found before he came in flesh….he exposed it in the Torah. Forgiveness. He is the ultimate in mercy yet he displayed his mercy from this very parasha….making garments of skin in the place of our sorry excuses for clothing….what we (human hands) could manage to put together on our own. Grace. Grace is even in the Torah, all throughout the Torah. Why did God love His son? Because He did everything He was commanded to do. He spoke of Avraham being glad in his day and it was his love of Avraham’s obedience to the Torah which bound them together.
Bereshit (Genesis ) 3; 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings…..
21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.
Bereshit (Genesis) 6; 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
Bereshit (Genesis) 18; 19 For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.”
Bereshit (Genesis) 26; 4 I will multiply yourdescendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; 5 because Abraham obeyed Me and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes and My Torah.”
What is more all important than the sacrifice of Yeshua? How, when and where did that sacrifice gain its full significance? From the beginning. And from here, I submit, it all comes together as a perfect unit….much like creation itself.
Baruch attah ADONAI Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, blessed are You Lord my God Creator and King of the universe. You alone have planted among us life eternal. Blessed are You Lord our God Gracious Giver of the Torah.
Avinu Malkeinu, my Father and my King. Your word is my water, air, food, it is my salve, comfort and shield. I never come back from paradise empty handed or empty hearted. You fill me to overflow. I know my King it is not I who makes anything grow….nor I who holds the seed….the field is not mine….nor the light nor the water for I am nothing. I will never convince any man that Your Torah is eternal. I will never have the right methods or approach to confirm what You have already given us in Your word and I can not speak for the Spirit in any heart or mind. But I know what He has shown me and placed inside my innermost parts. I will likewise never be enabled to change the mind that has been made up about who Yeshua is and what He came and did, nor will I be able to express sufficiently how I can hear his voice in the wind….how very close this world is to crumbling to the point of desperation. Arm us and return all hearts to You my King and let us bask and bathe in Your Holy word in Your Holy appointments and Your holy Sabbath. Let us learn to live each day as if we have been created for a purpose. As if today might be the day we again find ourselves in Paradise with you….connecting in the cool of the day. Thank You my King for all You have done, our handiwork may You establish for us and may You be glorified in each and everything we say, think and do. Have mercy on me for I am a vagrant and a wanderer….still, hineni ADONAI…..send me.
