Bereshit (Genesis) High Lights- Stand, and Walk.
Lech Lecha (“Go for yourself”)

Matthew 10; 34 Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household. 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 28 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who has found his life will loose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.”

–The Torah text we rest on today is incredible. Here we see a command given to Abram at the age of seventy five, for him to pull up his roots, displace all his property and family members and follow the Lord’s voice into the desert to an unfamiliar land. Much like the bride, Israel, is called into the wilderness to follow God to a place they did not know (For the Lord’s portion is His people; Jacob is the measure of His inheritance. He discovered him in a desert land, in desolation, a howling wilderness; He encircled him, He granted him discernment, He preserved him like the pupil of His eye. He was like an eagle arousing its nest, hovering over its young, spreading its wings and taking them, carrying them in its pinions. The Lord alone guided them, and no other power was with them. Devarim-Deuteronomy 32; 9-12), Abram is aroused now to leave it all but the command is that he do so for himself. On his own accord, by his own will, driven by his own desire…the one the Lord has been instilling in him all this time, to serve the Creator and be obedient to His will and design. The Hebrew word used here is Halak- to walk. To follow. This is the very thing the Messiah Yeshua asks us to do in the piercing text of Matthew. Leave family, leave friends, leave preconceived notions drop and leave behind all of it…to discover your identity in him. Take up your cross, which means death to every tie you had to a former self, bound by sin and lies of the world steeped in idolatry. Take hold of his offering, more valuable than ANY THING, his death so that you can stand, new…but one needs do more than stand, you must walk. Following him and his eternal commands, for life….eternally bound as in marriage to our Savior, never to be separated, flesh of flesh..

Genesis 12;1 HASHEM said to Abram, “Go for yourself from your land, from your relatives, and from your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation; I will bless you, and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you I will curse; and all the families of the earth shall bless themselves by you.” 4 So Abram went as HASHEM had spoken to him, and Lot went with him; Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.

Genesis 2;21 So HASHEM cast a deep sleep upon the man and he slept; and He took one of the sides and He filled in the flesh in its place. 22 Then HASHEM God fashioned the side that He had taken from the man into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And the man said, “This time it is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. This shall be called Woman, for from man was she taken.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and cling to his wife and they shall become one flesh.

Matthew 19;3 Some Pharisees came to Yeshua, testing Him and asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?” 4 And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

–Abram grew up in a household of idolatry. His father Terah make and sold idols for a living. It was the family business. One customer of his was none other than Nimrod. Nimrod eventually felt so challenged by Abram and His monotheistic message that he was cast into a fiery furnace and emerged unscathed.
The Lord had clearly called Abram from a young age and at the point of his departure from Haran it was more than a calling to him. Abram’s mission was to bring the knowledge of the One Sovereign God of the Universe to the entire known world. This is no small task, but as with all things Abram did, he went forth with intention and diligence. Later in the Torah text we read about the war with the kings, Abram receives word from a fugitive that Lot has been captured and he immediately musters his army. This army consists of the 318 DISCIPLES “born in his house” (Genesis 14;13-14). I believe these are the “souls” referred to in the passage below. Note as well in the text that Sarai is identified as an active partner in this ‘ministry’. She supports the mission of her husband and has done her part wholeheartedly to ‘make’ these ‘souls’. The text states that Abram and Sarai set out in obedience to the Lord, bringing with them all that is theirs, which includes these souls, these disciples that THEY have made. How is it that men make souls? The Messiah Yeshua tells his disciples to go out and make disciples of all the nations, this is the very thing Abram spends his entire life on. His tent doors are open to all who might pass by, any color, language or upbringing…his hospitality brings them in and over the table with full bellies and delighted senses he is able to explain to his guests Where and Whom all the richness they partook of came from. He testifies to the bounty of the Lord in all things and ministers to these people, until he creates disciples from all nations. This is our charge, this is what we have been told to do as well. Without the Lord we walk in empty, shallow and hollow tents. Without the light of the Word of God we sleep and rest in sin and stumble into pathways which lead to death. Abraham’s mission, Messiah’s charge, our exhortation is to teach others, ALL others we can, about the Lord…His word, His covenant and eternal Life…possible, accessible, available for each and every soul.

Genesis12; 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and Lot, his brother’s son, and all their wealth that they had amassed, and the souls (nephesh) they made (asah) in Haran; and they left to go to the land of Canaan, and they came to the land of Canaan.

הנפש Nepehesh- (neh-fesh) properly, a breathing creature, (abstractly) vitality; body; breath; creature; life; mortality; pleasure; desire. Soul.
עשו Asah- (aw-saw) to do or make; accomplish; advance; bear; bring forth; have the charge of; fashion; gather; furnish; fulfill; keep; maintain; provide. Prepare.

Matthew 28;16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Yeshua had designated. 17 When they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some were doubtful. 18 And Yeshua came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples (matheteuo) of all the nations, immersing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

Matheteuo (Math-ayt-yoo-o)- to become a pupil; to disciple; enroll as a scholar; instruct; teach.

Ezekiel 18;4 Behold, all souls are Mine; like the soul of the father, so the soul of the son, they are Mine. The soul that sins- it shall die.
20 The soul that sins, it shall die! A son shall not bear the iniquity of [his] father and a father shall not bear the iniquity of [his] son; the righteousness of the righteous person shall be upon him and the wickedness of the wicked person shall be upon him. 21 As for the wicked man, if he repents from all his sins that he committed, and he observes all My decrees and practices justice and righteousness, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 All his transgressions that he committed will not be remembered against him; he shall live because of the righteousness that he did. 23 Do I desire at all the death of a wicked man?- the word of the Lord HASHEM/ ELOHIM. Is it not rather his return from his ways, that he might live?

Isaiah 29;8 It will be as when the hungry man dreams and, behold, he is eating, but he wakes up and his soul is empty; and as when the thirsty man dreams and, behold, he is drinking, but he wakes up and, behold, he is weary and his soul craves drink. So will be the multitude of all the nations that muster themselves against Mount Zion.

–The destroyer, the liar will betray and beguile and attempt to convince us that the lake of fire was created for sinners and stumbler’s who either want nothing to do with the Torah (God’s heart and teaching, His original means of making souls) or those who ‘fail’ to keep it. He will stand before the Lord in arrogance as does the wicked king of Sodom and demand the souls, but like Abram the Messiah will triumphantly claim that which he fought, suffered, and died for…what he warred against all forces for and won! The souls. The souls of those attached to him, who can never be lost! Is not the lake of fire the bed of the liar?! It is not designed for those in Him who wins all wars for righteousness sake! The only thing we should consider is how to go forth, willingly with intention in our gait and confidence in our stride….with a sincere desire to serve the King on our hearts, the only thing that we should fear when we stumble and sin is how it might hurt the heart of our Groom, this is the healthy fear which servants of the Most High walk in. Not fear of damnation, fear of betraying our faithful Beloved. His mercy and forgiveness are everlasting, as the Ezekiel text states…He desires all to come to repentance, let us take up our mission to share this message, in Yeshua’s name. Let us respond as Avraham avinu (father Abraham) does, refusing in the Name of the Most High, the offering of the evil one and safeguarding that which truly matters:

Genesis 14;14 And when Abram heard that his kinsman was taken captive, he armed his disciples who had been born in his house- three hundred and eighteen- and he pursued them as far as Dan. 15 And he with his servants deployed against them at night and struck them;
16 He brought back all the possessions; he also brought back his kinsman, Lot, with his possessions, as well as the women and the people.
21 The king of Sodom said to Abram: “Give me the people (nephesh) and take the possessions for yourself.”
22 Abram said to the king of Sodom: “I lift up my hand to HASHEM, God, the Most High, Maker of heaven and earth, 23 if so much as a thread to a shoe strap; or if I shall take from anything of yours! ”

Psalm 25;10 All the ways of HASHEM are kindness and truth, to those who guard His covenant and testimonies. 11 For Your Name’s sake, HASHEM, pardon my guilt for it is great. 12 Whosoever is the man who fears HASHEM, He will teach him the way that he should choose. 13 His soul will repose in goodness, and his offspring will inherit the land. 14 The secret of HASHEM is to those who fear Him, and His covenant to inform them. 15 My eyes are constantly toward HASHEM, for He will remove my feet from the snare.

Blessed are You Lord my God Creator and King of the Universe,
You have blessed us with Your Torah of truth, You have blessed us with the entire counsel of Your living word, You alone have planted among us life eternal.
Blessed are You Lord, our God.
B’Shem Yeshua HaMashiac, Amein.

Lord how far will we be willing to go, how hot will we be willing to get to save a brother from the fire…the lies, let Your people no longer believe. Lord give us the strength to rise early, muster all you have put within us and go forth for ourselves, willingly, anxiously to serve You and to teach others about You and Your great love. Lord free us from doubt and underestimation! Lord enable us to do great things in Your name, for Your glory alone! Thank You for Your Son, thank You for His word, Your word which speaks to our hearts from every single page…about him and all he has done for us….all he plans to do with us.
Strengthen us, bless us, encourage us, fill all our needs, please…in Yeshua’s name I ask these things and I thank and praise You. Draw us nearer, console and caress us the way only You can. Amein.
